McCaul Renews Call to Begin Trade Negotiations with Taiwan

Washington, D.C. — As President Biden kicks off his trip to the Indo-Pacific region, China Task Force Chairman Michael McCaul has released the following statement calling on the Biden administration to begin overdue trade negotiations with Taiwan. The President is expected to focus on economic issues during his trip. A bilateral trade agreement with Taiwan was one of the recommendations of the China Task Force Report, released in 2020.

“Taiwan is our tenth-largest trading partner, one of our largest agricultural export markets, a critical partner in high-tech supply chains, and most importantly, a high-standards free-market democracy. Deepening our trade ties with Taiwan would benefit the United States. The administration should include Taiwan in its Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and pursue bilateral trade negotiations, which Taiwan has been ready to begin for years.”
