Washington, D.C. — China Task Force Chairman Michael McCaul has released the following statement in response to the Biden administration’s decision to suspend Trump era tariffs on solar products. Approximately 80% of solar panelsare made in China, which are subject to tariffs in the U.S. after decades of dumping by Chinese manufacturers. The Commerce Department has been investigating China’s use of other countries to avoid these tariffs. The Biden administration has admitted the solar panel supply chain in China is tainted by Uyghur forced labor and has declared the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of them and other ethnic and religious minorities in China a genocide.

“The President’s suspension of solar tariffs is a cave to the Chinese Communist Party that hurts U.S. solar manufacturers, undermines an ongoing investigation into the CCP’s tariff evasion, and cuts against American values. It will help the CCP continue putting U.S. solar firms out of business by dumping underpriced goods into our market. It gives amnesty to products that the administration admitted are linked to genocide and slave labor, and that the President himself signed a law to block. I strongly urge the President to reconsider this decision and recommit to an approach that prioritizes our economy and our principles.”
